Makati Mayor and United Opposition (UNO) president Jejomar C. Binay today said former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino’s martyrdom gains special significance especially amidst the rampant abuse of power under the Arroyo administration.

“Ninoy opposed the abuse of power under a regime that does not respect democratic rights and treats itself as above the law. His martyrdom gains special significance today as we fight a regime with a track record of abusing power and dispensing public funds without any concern for accountability,” he said.

The Arroyo administration is caught in a raging controversy over lavish dinners and possible misuse of public funds during a recent working visit to the United States . The opposition had charged that Mrs. Arroyo plans to cling to power beyond 2010 by forcing an amendment to the Constitution, and even by declaring martial law.

Binay said the extensive activities to mark Ninoy’s 26th death anniversary should convince the Arroyo administration that it would be foolhardy for them to pursue their plan to remain in power beyond 2010.

The opposition leader said there are reports that a faction within the Arroyo administration insists on pushing ahead with their plan to cling to power beyond 2010, believing that the outpouring of sympathy for former president Cory Aquino would not translate into concrete opposition.

“I am told that this faction is convinced that Mrs. Arroyo can ride out the public sympathy for President Cory. They still think they can push ahead with their plan to cling to power either through Charter Change or outright martial law,” he said.

But Binay said the various activities marking Ninoy Aquino’smartyrdom shows that the people “have been awakened to the importance of defending our democracy.”

“The Arroyo administration should realize that the various activities to mark Ninoy’s martyrdom are signals that the people will not stand idly and allow the present administration to abuse our hard-won democracy,” he said.

Binay earlier warned the Arroyo administration that it faces a “political upheaval” should it push through with its agenda of clinging to power beyond 2010.

The opposition leader said the death of former president Aquino has led to the political awakening of a new generation of Filipinos “who are now aware that the freedom they enjoy was earned through struggle against a dictatorship.”

MANILA, Philippines - Months after announcing his plans to run for President in 2010, United Opposition president and Makati City mayor Jejomar Binay is entertaining thoughts of sliding down to the vice presidential race.

Binay said in a radio interview he is willing to be former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada’s running mate should Estrada decide to run in the presidential derby.

“Kung si Pangulong Erap ay totoong magkakandidato at yan maging decision ng partido e ako ho naman ay umaasa ako ang magiging pangalawang pangulo niya, Binay said in an interview on dzXL radio.

[If President Erap would run for president and the opposition would agree to it, then I would hope to be his running mate.]

The mayor’s Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan
(PDP-Laban) is allied with Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) party.

In November 2008, Binay disclosed plans of running for the highest post of the land, with his supporters drawing comparisons between him and US President Barack Obama.

Binay has starred in several infomercials extolling his achievements as mayor of Makati City.

On the other hand, Binay said the opposition may draw up its ticket for 2010 in as early as two months from now.

“Tingnan natin ng dalawang buwan [Let’s see in the next two months)," he said when asked about when the opposition can firm up its ticket. - GMANews.TV

The outpouring of public support for the late former President Corazon Aquino is a warning sign for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies not to ram Charter change down Filipinos' throats, United Opposition (Uno) president and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay said Wednesday.

But a Palace official saw it differently, saying Mrs. Aquino's death as a call for national unity and that the administration is willing to reconcile with its political foes.

Binay, a close friend and ally of Mrs. Aquino, said the show of people power at Mrs. Aquino's "people's funeral" signifies that the people are capable of staging a political upheaval if Mrs. Arroyo insists on clinging to power beyond 2010.

"Cory’s death has awakened the people. She has bridged the generation that took part in EDSA 1 with the younger generation who are now aware that the freedom they enjoy was earned through struggle against a dictatorship," he said in an article posted on the Makati City Web portal.

"I am certain that if Mrs. Arroyo pushes through with her selfish agenda, the spirit of Cory Aquino will rally the people," he added.

Binay said that during the Marcos regime in 1986, Mrs. Aquino stood up against the martial law regime, fought for clean and honest elections.

After EDSA-1 toppled the dictatorship, Mrs. Aquino stood for morality and transparency in government when she became president, he added.

In 2005, Mrs. Aquino openly called for the resignation of Mrs. Arroyo over the “Hello Garci" scandal involving alleged fraud in the 2004 presidential elections. She also led protest actions against the declaration of a state of emergency in January 2006 and the NBN-ZTE scandal in early 2008.

"The younger generation got a crash course in contemporary history. In a span of four days, they learned how difficult life was under a dictatorship, and how our freedom was earned with the sacrifice of so many lives, among them Cory’s husband Ninoy Aquino," Binay said.

"By her example, Cory showed the people the importance of standing up against an oppressive, corrupt and power hungry regime. She showed us that even as a private citizen, we can and should stand up for what is right," he added.

Call for unity

In Malacañang, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the death of Mrs. Aquino should be a signal for all Filipinos to unite and set aside political agenda.

A Palace statement said Remonde called for unity, which he said could ease the political tension especially considering that the 2010 elections is just around the corner.

Less political tension according to him would allow Mrs. Arroyo to finish her programs in energy, education and environment before her term ends next year, he added.

He described the predawn visit of Mrs. Arroyo to the wake of Mrs. Aquino as "a triumph of goodwill against ill-will."

The Aquino family has turned down the Arroyo administration’s offer to give Mrs. Aquino a state funeral, saying they were more comfortable with a private funeral.

Nonetheless, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) accorded the former president all the necessary honors as mandated by law. -

MANILA, Philippines - United Opposition president and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay said Wednesday President Arroyo had given orders to allies in the House of Representatives to push Charter change via constituent assembly (con-ass).

“May balita kami na pinatawag ang mga congressman, sabi sa kanila, ‘Oy, push-in na ninyo ang Cha-cha’ [We got information that the President called the congressmen and told them: ‘Hey, push Charter change’]," Binay said in an interview on dzXL radio.

But deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez Jr. said the House of Representatives merely followed its "independent" list of priority measures to pass – including the one seeking to convene a con-ass in proposing Charter amendment.

In an interview on dzXL radio, Golez said Malacañang respects the independence of Congress in determining its own list of priority measures.

Binay insisted that President Arroyo’s allies in the House railroaded Cha-cha via con-ass even if the resolution had been rejected.

“Ginagago-gago tayo. Yan naman ho ay mandosita ni Mrs. Arroyo yan [We are being taken for fools. That Cha-cha push was on Mrs. Arroyo’s orders]," he said.

On the other hand, Binay said Mrs. Arroyo showed duplicity with merger of the Lakas-CMD and her Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) parties.

At the time, Mrs. Arroyo said the merger of Lakas and Kampi showed her administration is gearing up for elections in 2010.

“Di niya sinabi kung anong klaseng halalan kung presidential or parliamentary [But she did not say if the elections would be under a presidential or parliamentary system]," he said.

The daughter-in-law of Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay passed away on Tuesday due to a difficult pregnancy.

Kennely Ann Lacia-Binay, 29, died at 12:06 p.m. at the Makati Medical Center where she had been confined for more than a month.

Mrs. Binay, or Ken-Ken as she was fondly called by family and friends, was survived by her husband, City Councilor Jejomar Erwin S. Binay Jr.; and children Jejomarie Alexi, 6; Maria Isabel, 3; and Jejomar III.

A statement from the office of Mayor Binay said the wake would be held Tuesday evening at 8776 Banuyo cor. Santol St., San Antonio Village in Makati City.

MANILA – Inihayag ni Makati City Mayor Jejomar “Jojo" Binay nitong Martes ang kanyang plano na tumakbong presidente sa 2010 elections.

Sa ulat ng GMA’s Flash Report, inanunsyo ni Binay ang kanyang plano sa pagdiriwang ng kanyang ika-66 kaarawan sa Makati City Hall.

Ayon kay Binay, hindi niya tatanggihan kung siya ang pipiliin ng United Opposition (UNO) na maging standard bearer sa 2010. Si Binay ang presidente ng UNO.

Sa hiwalay na ulat ng dzBB radio, sinabi ni Binay na ipinaalam na niya ang kanyang plano sa 2010 kay dating Pangulong Joseph Estrada.

Bukod kay Binay, nagpahayag na rin ng intensyon na tumakbong presidente sa 2010 sina Senate President Manny Villar at chairman Bayani Fernando ng Metro Manila Development Authority.

Ang iba pang itinuturing “presidentiables" ay sina Vice President Manuel “Noli" de Castro, Sens Manuel “Mar" Roxas II, Panfilo Lacson, Richard Gordon, at Loren Legarda.

Sa pinakahuling survey ng Social Weather Station (SWS), nangungunang pinagpipilian para maging susunod na presidente ng bansa sina De Castro, Villar at Legarda.

Kwalipikado

Sinabi naman ni Estrada na ang magandang pamamahala ni Binay sa Makati ay patunay na kwalipikado ang alkalde na tumakbong presidente sa 2010.

"Si Mayor Binay din naman ay may kapasidad, may abilidad. Napakita ni Mayor Binay yung kanyang kakayahan bilang chief executive ng premier city ng Pilipinas," ayon kay sa Estarada sa panayam ng QTV’s Balitanghali nitong Martes.

Ngunit iginiit ni Estrada na wala pang mapipisil ang UNO na ipangtatapat nila sa magiging standard bearer ng administrasyon.

"Sa ngayon, wala pa tayong napipili. Kung sino ang nakikita nating pinakamalakas, yun ang pipiliin natin. Siguro mga one year before o less than a year before the elections malalaman na natin kung sinong nangunguna sa survey,' ayon kay Estrada na naunang nagpahayag na tatakbo rin kapag hindi nakaiisa ang oposisyon.

Ngunit hindi umano nawawalan ng pag-asa si Estrada na may mapipili silang iisang kandidato sa 2010 upang matiyak ang panalo ng oposisyon. Dapat umanong tularan ng UNO ang panalo ni Democrat Sen Barack Obama na naging pambato ng oposisyon sa US at nanalo.

"Sana magkaisa ang oposisyon para masiguro ang panalo ng oposisyon. Sa nakaraang eleksyon ay apat-apat ang kumandidato, kaya madaling nadaya. Mukhang nangyari nung 2004 eleksyon, pinaghiwahiwalay ang mga boto ni FPJ [Fernando Poe Jr] at nagdagdag-bawas pa," ayon kay Estrada.

Kabilang sa tumakbong presidente noong 2004 na sinasabing humati sa boto ng oposisyon ay si Sen Lacson na nakaribal ni Poe.

Maaga pa

Para naman sa mga kaalyado ng administrasyon, masyado pang maaga upang pag-usapan ang halalan sa 2010 at mas maraming problema ang bansa na dapat umanong unahin.

Sa ipinadalang text message sa media ni Presidential Deputy Spokesperson Lorelei Fajardo, sinabi nito na nakatuon pa rin ang atensyon ng Malacanang sa “governance and reforms" at wala pa silang balak na makipagsabayan sa mga "people’s political ambitions."

Inaasahan pa umano ng Malacanang ang iba pang pulitiko na magdedeklara ng kanilang plano sa 2010 polls.

Jojo Binay: Is he or isn't he?

Running for President in 2010, that is.

Described by some quarters as the Philippine’s “Barack Obama” (perhaps not only because of the color of his skin), Makati Mayor Jojo Binay hasn’t formally announced his intentions for the 2010 elections and movie writers (of all people!) are expecting an “important announcement” from him tomorrow night, Feb. 3, when Jojo graces the cocktails for the movie Walang Atrasan, Walang Iwanan at Glorietta 4’s Ascott Makati, Makati City.

Directed by Cyril Lorenzana, the movie is about Jojo’s life story, with Fredmoore delos Santos playing him (with Boots Anson-Roa, Aiza marquez, Kier Legaspi and Alvin Anson as co-stars).

The 7101 Islands Entertainment producer believes that Jojo’s success story “will inspire others to reach out and follow their dreams.”

In the Philippines, those who want to run especially for a high(er) office usually kick off their (formal) campaign with a bioflick.
